Home › Stain & Paint Matching
We mix the stain until it matches.
Stain mixed in our own shop from a sample of your wood, and paint matched to the color already on your walls.
What the work involves.
This is the part almost nobody does. A paint counter can read a color and mix a formula. Nobody there can look at forty year old oak that has faded unevenly under a south window and tell you what will sit right beside it.
We work from a physical sample of your wood. Sample boards go up against the existing trim, in the same light, and we adjust until the match holds from every angle in the room. You approve the sample before anything is applied.
That is why we can match a discontinued color, a sun faded door, or one weathered casing in a room of twelve. And when windows or doors are replaced, it is why the new units disappear into the ones that stayed.
Paint works the same way. We match what is already on your walls, trim and doors, so a repair or an addition reads as original.
What is included
- Mixed from your own sample
- Discontinued and faded colors
- One casing in a room of twelve
- New units matched to existing
- Stain, or paint, or both
- Sample approved before we start
Free estimate, sample, then the work.
We look at the job and put honest pricing in writing. For anything involving color, you approve a physical sample before we start. Then we prep, protect and finish, and walk it with you before we leave.
Nothing is coated until you say so.
Matching is the slow part, and it happens before any work starts. You are never asked to approve a color from a chip or a screen.
- We work from your woodA physical sample of your trim, door or cabinet goes to the shop. The match is mixed against the real thing, not against a photograph.
- You see it on siteThe sample comes back and gets held against the wood it has to live beside, in the light of your own room. Daylight and lamplight both.
- As many passes as it takesIf the first mix is not right, we mix again. The sampling is part of the estimate, not an extra line on the invoice.
- Then, and only thenThe job starts after you have said the match is right. No surprises on the last day.
About stain & paint matching.
Usually, yes. Because we mix in our own shop rather than ordering a formula, we work from your physical sample until the match is right. Bring us a piece of trim, a cabinet door or a drawer front.
A sample of the wood if one can be spared, or a photo in good natural light. A drawer front or an offcut of casing is ideal.
Yes. We match to sample at volume for builders, GCs and manufacturers through our finishing shop.
