Home  ›  Cabinet Finishing

A new kitchen without the remodel.

Doors and drawer fronts come to the shop, boxes are finished on site, and the whole run ends up one consistent tone.

Cabinet finishing

What the work involves.

Cabinets are the clearest case for refinishing over replacing. The boxes in most Minnesota kitchens are solid. What dates them is the color and the sheen, and both of those are a finishing problem, not a carpentry one.

Doors and drawer fronts come off and go to the shop, where they can be sprayed flat and cured without dust from the room settling into the finish. Boxes and face frames are finished in place. Your kitchen stays usable through most of the job.

Consistency is the hard part and the reason to hire it out. Twenty doors finished over four days have twenty chances to drift in tone. Controlling that is the difference between a kitchen that looks refinished and one that looks new.

How it works

Free estimate, sample, then the work.

We look at the job and put honest pricing in writing. For anything involving color, you approve a physical sample before we start. Then we prep, protect and finish, and walk it with you before we leave.

While we are there

You will have a kitchen tonight.

The question everybody asks first is how long they lose the kitchen. The honest answer is: the sink, the stove and the fridge keep working the whole time. It is the doors that leave, not the kitchen.

  • Doors leave, boxes stayDoors and drawer fronts come off and go to the shop. The boxes are finished in place, so you keep using the cabinets while the fronts are away.
  • Everything comes back where it wasEvery door and hinge is labeled as it comes off. Nothing gets rehung on the wrong box and nothing comes back short a screw.
  • Cure time before you load themA finish that feels dry is not finished hardening. We tell you how long to wait before stacking plates on a shelf, and it is worth waiting.
  • Dust kept out of the foodWe seal off the kitchen and contain the sanding. Counters wiped and floors swept before we leave each day.
Common questions

About cabinet finishing.

Mostly yes. Doors are away for several days and the boxes are finished in place, so you lose the doors rather than the kitchen.

Yes. Stained oak can go to a solid painted finish, or to a different stain tone. We sample it first so you approve the direction before we commit.

Substantially, when the boxes are sound. If they are not, we will tell you that instead of finishing cabinets that should be replaced.
